Ladybug’s Kitty Rescue

Newsletter for January 2OO6

Welcome back, I hope that your holidays were great and that you have a wonderful year this year! We are located in Pensacola, FL.

Last year I mentioned a plan of action that I had hoped would be in full swing by now, but not all things go as planned. First of all there was no public support. I know that there are many people who are dedicated cat lovers who would support this plan if they knew about it. There are many people out there who have colonies of feral cats in which they care for, who would love to see a 501(c) 3 Free Spay and Neuter clinic for Feral and Stray cats. They spend countless dollars feeding these cats and can’t always come up with the means to be able to get them all trapped and spayed and neutered. We really need to have a FREE clinic that they can take these cats to. This is what it will take to see this happen and to see the end of our cat overpopulation problems!:

1.    People who care, like yourself to donate money and help to raise funds to start the corporation and have it made into a 501 (c) 3 corporation.

2.    People who would like to be active in the corporation to ensure that it works, that have the time and resources to help get the cat’s off the streets and into the FREE clinic to be spayed/neutered, vaccinated for Rabies and returned to their colonies where they can live out their lives in their familiar habitat.

3.    Volunteers to be foster parents for any kittens that are found so that they can be spayed/neuter and adopted in their ‘forever’ homes.

4.    That is basically it, we need people to volunteer and to help raise money. Without Public support we will be killing about 30 kittens and cats a day this year for a total of 11,200.

We have to have the support of this community behind us for us to be able to go forward. This FREE spay/neuter clinic could also spay and neuter kittens and cats from the local Humane Society and County Pound and the other two cat rescue organizations here in Pensacola, FL prior to them being adopted. The FREE clinic WOULD NOT spay and neuter peoples pets. That is their responsibility. Our responsibility will be to spay and neuter all cats and kittens that have no homes, whether they are going to placed in homes or not. All rescues, shelters from all over the country are spaying and neutering kittens and puppies as young as 8 weeks old. Escambia County is the only county that I know of not doing this and it could be a large reason why we have such an over population problem. If you would like to help, please contact me at 850-308-5605 (it is my home number) or text me for free through www.cingular.com at 386-837-8914. Wouldn’t you like to be part of something that has never been done before? There are articles written on the cat over population problem and most of the so called ‘experts’ agree that there is no solution. I believe that if there are no reproducing cats, how can we have a problem? The second part to my solution is: Have licensed breeders who must have a veterinarian that takes care of their cattery who will write a report concerning the health and well being of cats produced. The county animal control would be in charge of the licensed breeders, insuring their compliance with vaccinations and ensuring that the breeders are requiring that all kittens sold are spayed and neutered the same way that the county pound and other shelters do by requiring proof that the kitten has been spayed or neutered and if it isn’t provided by the new owners they must relinquish the kitten back to the breeder. The county would earn money through the licensing process and the veterinarians would earn money through the veterinary care of the breeders’ cats and kittens. Breeders would only be allowed to produce a litter of kittens when they have enough approved homes for the kittens to go to. In other words, unless there is a demand for a litter, one will not be produced. The county can charge a high fine for any litter produced without enough people who want them. The breeder’s would not be allowed to advertise the sale of kittens ‘per say’ but they would be allowed to advertise their cattery and to keep a list of those who wish to purchase a kitten from them. Any ads in the paper for ‘kittens free to good homes’ or ‘kittens for sale’ would be outside the law due to it being illegal to allow a cat to reproduce unless you are a licensed breeder. Such ads would be required to be followed up on by animal control and high fines paid by who ever is advertising as well as their losing the cats and kittens.

The fact that a cat’s life is much more valuable than what is demonstrated in our county and our country today needs to change. If you agree with me on this … please for the sake of each and every cat that is put down everyday … please contact me. The amount of money that was poured into the rescue of pets after the hurricanes proves that people care. But you have to understand that everyday is a natural disaster to a cat without a home, that is not spayed or neutered! We caused their lives to be like this and only we can make it all better. Pensacola can show all the so called ‘Experts’ that it can be done. I believe that we can work together and get the 11,200 down to zero in as little as 5 years! Maybe less. We can’t do it though if we don’t pull together and make it happen.
